The aberrant ‘motivational salience’ hypothesis has its origins in a recent interpretation of the role of dopmaine as signalling rewards associated to stimuli so as to guide behaviour. An aberrant ‘motivational salience’ is an incorrect assignment of motivational salience to innocuous stimuli, where dopamine acts as an indicator of motivation, desire, or attention attributed to a stimulus.
